VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Chesapeake man has been sentenced to 14 years for assaulting and disarming police officers, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said.

Prosecutors said on May 6, 2023,  a Virginia Beach police officer attempted a traffic stop after 33-year-old Dean Anton Vitasek was seen driving without a front license plate. He ignored the officer's command to stop, pulled into a 7-Eleven, and walked inside.

After the officer determined Vitasek had a warrant for his arrest, the officer's sergeant was called to the scene. After the sergeant arrived, both officers walked into the store and attempted to take Vitasek into custody. When the officers grabbed him, Vitasek spit blood on the officers' faces, punched and kicked them, attempted to disarm one officer of his Taser, and bit one officer.

Police said it took multiple responding officers to ultimately subdue Vitasek.

After handcuffing him, officers said they did not find a gun on Vitasek, but narcotics, syringes with blood and residue, and a straw with residue were found in Vitasek's vehicle.

He was transported to the hospital for observation. After being released from the hospital, officers attempted to put him in a police car. Vitasek tried to escape. He had to be restrained after biting, scratching, and spitting at officers.

On Nov. 4, Vitasek was sentenced to 65 years and 36 months with 51 years and 36 months suspended, leaving 14 years to serve.

According to officials, Vitasek had prior convictions for prior convictions for petit larceny, destruction of property, attempted grand larceny, possession of burglary tools, trespassing, public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of possession of schedule I/II drug), DUI, grand larceny, obtaining money by false pretenses, assault on a law enforcement officer, and multiple probation violations and traffic offenses.
