YORKTOWN, Va. — Two people have been arrested after breaking into a home near the Yorktown area Friday night, the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office (YPSO) said.
York County deputies said the two burglars — later identified as 52-year-old Jonathan Bolton and 60-year-old Karen Canniff — were caught in the act, breaking into a home on Old Williamsburg Road at around 11:45 p.m.
Sheriff Ron Montgomery said the home has been unoccupied because the house is under renovation. He said the homeowner saw the two approaching the house and went inside into the garage.
"She said she saw the male go into the garage, and we had information that the female had made her way further inside," said Montgomery.
By the time deputies arrived, they allegedly found Bolton inside the garage and Caniff inside the attic. Canniff had attempted to hide herself in the attic's insulation, but deputies took both into custody without an incident.
Investigators arrested Bolton and Canniff for breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools, and possession of drugs charges.
Montgomery said without the home surveillance system no one would have known about the break-in and called it a classic case of "see something, say something."
"Because of [the homeowner's] actions our deputies were able to get there within minutes," said Montgomery. "We talk about it all the time, that ring camera, or security cameras are not only helpful to homeowners but also to law enforcement."
The duo are wanted on similar charges in Newport News and King and Queen County.
Bolton was wanted in King and Queen County for burglary, grand larceny and destruction of property.
Canniff was wanted out of Newport News on 10 counts of burglary, two larceny offenses, and two charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. She was also wanted out of King and Queen County for burglary, grand larceny and destruction of property.
Both are currently being held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
