Arrest made in deadly Newport News shooting from August

The suspected shooter is facing several charges, including second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Nearly three months after a man was gunned down in broad daylight in Newport News, authorities announced the suspected shooter has been arrested.

John Peden, 30, was arrested Sunday afternoon in connection to the August 4 shooting that killed 31-year-old Kevin Hughes, the Newport News Police Department said Monday.

Shortly after 2:15 p.m. on August 4, police found Hughes suffering from a gunshot wound in the 400 block of Nelson Drive, off Warwick Boulevard. The 31-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests were immediately made. Over the course of the investigation, detectives said they linked Peden to the shooting.

Peden was booked into jail on charges of second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of firearm in commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm.

“I want to thank the community, officers and detectives who put in countless hours, as well as the investment made in technology used to help bring this case to a resolution,” said NNPD Chief of Police Steve Drew.

Details about what led up to the shooting or a possible motive have not been released.
