13-year-old charged in connection to York High School shooting threat

The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office said they were made aware Saturday night of a threat on social media to shoot up the school's homecoming dance.
A former deputy with the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is facing misdemeanor assault charges after an alleged fight over fireworks.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — A 13-year-old juvenile is in police custody after threatening to carry out a shooting at York High School, according to a social media post by the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office.

Around 6:50 p.m. Saturday, deputies said they learned of a shooting plot that involved the school's Homecoming dance – scheduled for that same night – after someone had seen the threat posted on the teen's social media. 

Deputies and school administrators worked quickly to locate and identify the poster.

After interviewing them, deputies took the juvenile into custody. They are charged with a felony, threats of bodily injury to persons on school property. 

The 13-year-old is being detained at the Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center.
