RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia State Police trooper who was killed in the line of duty will be laid to rest on Saturday.
Trooper Lucas Dowell, 28, died after he was shot Monday night while serving a search warrant in Cumberland County. State police said a tactical team went into a home when a man inside opened fire.
Police returned fire hitting the suspect and killing him. The suspect's name still has not been released at this time.
No other troopers were injured in the shooting.
The public is welcome to attend Trooper Dowell's visitation and funeral services. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chilhowie Christian Church at 172 Apple Valley Road in Chilhowie.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Chilhowie Christian Church.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Ralph Northam said, "The passing of Trooper Dowell is a great loss to the Commonwealth. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends who knew Trooper Dowell best. We are grateful for his dedication to the safety of our communities, and for all of those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others."
