NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Executives with Newport News-Williamsburg Airport are beginning to plan what the next 20 years could look like.
They are currently developing a new master plan for the first time since 2014. The updated plan comes after several setbacks this year, including the departure of Avelo Airlines in April due to economic and market reasons, and the termination of the airport's executive director.
Thursday night, community members gathered at the Virginia Peninsula Chamber for an input session.
Geston Pierre said he travels often for work and prefers to fly out of the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport when possible. But, Pierre said he would like to see more flight options at the airport.
“Having more airlines and more time availabilities would be more convenient for frequent Newport News airport flyers," he said.
Lisa Cheung, a senior airport planner with Passero Associates, is working with the airport to develop the new master plan.
She said after monitoring social media, it's clear people want more commercial service at the airport.
Cheung said airport executives are also discussing cargo services. Poquoson resident Mark Berrier thinks that would be a good idea.
“We compete right now with Norfolk and Richmond for passenger. That's always going to be a given," Berrier said. "But to bring tax revenue into the city and into the area... I think would be ideal.”
Cheung said there will be additional public input meetings before the master plan is completed She said the master plan is expected to be completed in 2025.
