Queen in a Dress: Helping young ladies get dressed up for their special prom night

"Queen in a Dress" is an annual event that gives prom dresses, dress shoes, makeup, and jewelry to students from ages 6 up through high school.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A woman is asking for help in her goal of getting young ladies dressed and ready for their prom.

Nakeya Green started "Queen in a Dress" after her mother passed away from cancer "to turn [her] pain into purpose." On her GoFundMe page, she explains that the annual event gives prom dresses, dress shoes, makeup, and jewelry to students from ages 6 up through high school.

Green said in her GoFundMe that this year has been their lowest donation year and their need is significant because over 140 young girls have registered for this year's event.

The official event is taking place on March 3 at 9912 Hosier Street, Newport News from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Green said they assist any young lady at the event whether they have registered or not.

They plan to apply for grants and transition into a non-profit to help with the growing need. You can find more information about the event and donate to Green's cause by visiting their GoFundMe or joining their Facebook group.
