Local radio station gives away turkeys to help Hispanic families connect with the Thanksgiving holiday

“Helping families celebrate it is a way we can involve them in life here, especially as food costs continue to increase.”

NORFOLK, Va. — With Thanksgiving being less than two weeks away, a local radio station helped some families not only prepare for the holiday, but for some of them, learn about and connect with a beloved tradition of their new home.

On Saturday, La Selecta, the region’s only 24-hour Hispanic radio station. gave away more than 500 turkeys.

“A major focus of our mission is to help Hispanics become part of the greater Hampton Roads community, along with serving the community as a whole," according to a statement sent out by Ricardo Alegria, co-CEO of Dos Media, the Norfolk-based company which owns and operates La Selecta.

The turkey giveaway is one way they say will help these families learn an American tradition.

The event also featured live music and entertainment for the whole family.

“Thanksgiving is such an important holiday,” Dos Media co-CEO Jhirber Galva - known on the air as Mangu - commented in a released statement. “Helping families celebrate it is a way we can involve them in life here, especially as food costs continue to increase.”
