NORFOLK, Va. — People on Sunday are remembering Sonya Massey in multiple "day of mourning" events across the country and in Hampton Roads.
She is the woman an Illinois deputy shot and killed in her own home earlier this month after she called them for help.
Police body cam video shows Sheriff Deputy Sean Grayson shooting Massey. He has been taken into custody. A review by Illinois State Police found Grayson was not justified in his use of deadly force.
An activist group organized a march in solidarity for justice in Norfolk on Sunday. Strong emotions sparked the rally at MLK Park, with organizers hoping to bring the Norfolk community together.
“Tamika Mallory and the group ‘Until Freedom’, they actually did a call to action on social media," said community activist Jacqueline Horton. "So, when they put this call to action up for people in other states, I knew that was the moment where we needed to join in solidarity.”
Horton and her organization The Underground 1865 marched, with dozens of people coming out to show their support and demand justice for Massey.
