NORFOLK, Va. — Members of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore came together on Tuesday to pack hundreds of boxes with food and supplies for Hampton Roads families experiencing hunger.
September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about hunger in America and inspire action. According to Feeding America’s annual Map the Meal Gap study, food insecurity increased across Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, from 98,580 to 132,240 - that's 10.5% of the population. Among children, the study calls the situation even more dire, with 1 in 6 children experiencing food insecurity.
