FEEDING 5000 event serves Hampton Roads families ahead of Thanksgiving

Community members received pre-packaged meals free of charge that they could take to go, from a drive-thru or walk-up.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For more than two decades, the Andrew Shannon FEEDING 5000 has served Virginia families and individuals ahead of Thanksgiving -- and this year was no different.

From noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News hosted the Thanksgiving Harvest and Community Celebration. Community members received pre-packaged meals free of charge that they could take to go, from a drive-thru or walk-up.

Andrew Shannon, founder and organizer of FEEDING 5000, said it's "the largest gathering of families and individuals in one setting for Food Distribution of Pre-packaged meals served To Go DRIVE-THRU and/or WALK UP”

A number of elected officials, business and community leaders were there as "celebrity servers," according to a press release. The event was catered by Chic A Sea.
