CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Boy Scouts of America (BSA) started officially welcoming girls aged 11 to 17 into its program on February 1, 2019.
Scouts BSA allows participating girls to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
On February 1, local female Scouts from Troop 374 went to the outdoors to embark on its first camping trip at Camp Moonyah off of Greenwing Drive in Chesapeake.

The girls chopped their own firewood, practiced tying known, and cooked outdoors.
“I remember watching my brother all the way up until Eagle Scout,” said new Scout Kaitlyn Röetz. “That was such a momentous occasion for my family. I want to do that for myself too.”
Boy Scouts of America, now known as Scouts BSA, welcome all teen and pre-teen girls to join non-co-ed local troops. The troops are single-gender and meet independently.
The Tidewater Council is the 5th oldest Boy Scout council in the United States and was established in 1911. Today, the council serves youth in the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake, as well as seven counties in northeastern North Carolina. Boy Scouts of America is one of the world’s largest youth organizations.
