PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is cautioning the public to look out for unlicensed boat charters in Virginia, according to a news release.
The Coast Guard said unlicensed vessel charters are illegal and unsafe.
It is investigating and issuing citations to boat owners in Virginia offering unlicensed charter services, the Coast Guard said.
An unlicensed charter is potentially dangerous because it may not have the proper emergency safety gear, or the proper navigation and communication gear, and it may not have undergone the proper license exams and inspections.
“We want to ensure prospective passengers are putting their trust in properly-credentialed mariners who are capable of transporting them safely, adeptly, and in compliance of all federal regulations,” said Capt. Kevin Carroll, commander, Sector Hampton Roads, in the news release.
Anyone considering chartering or operating their boat with passengers for hire should contact Sector Hampton Roads Marine Inspections at D05-DG-SectorHR-INSP@uscg.mil.
The Coast Guard asks the boating community to be vigilant and report any suspicious operations to 757-668-5555 or email D05-SMB-SectorHRCC@uscg.mil.
