CHKD creates program for young children with autism

The Children's Hospital of King's Daughters has developed a Early Child Development Clinic for their young autism patients.

NORFOLK, Va. — According to the CDC, 1 in 59 children are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Early warning signs will be in the infancy and early childhood, where signs will vary greatly between baby and toddler.

The signs include delayed language, inconsistent social engagement, repetitive behaviors, and sensory-related sensitivities. Catching signs before 18 months of age can reduce the disorder's effects, and will help your child learn, grow, and thrive.

At CHKD the Developmental Pediatrics provide consultations for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of children with developmental disabilities. The program is designated as a Child Development Center through the Virginia Department of Health for this region.

The clinic triage's children under three years old for a complete work-up followed by an evaluation to determine if the child meets the diagnostic criteria for ASD.

Then there is a three-step process for the autism diagnosis.

Support and resources for newly diagnosed patients and families and families going through the assessment process. Regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay, the patients will be cared for.
