Blood Deficits Rise with Cancellations

As more events are cancelled, blood drives go with them

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — As society takes the necessary measure to combat the Coronavirus pandemic, unintended consequences become inevitable.

For the Red Cross, they've already begun. As more public institutions cancel their day to day activities, the opportunities for mobile blood drives are more and more scarce.

" Just think, all of the schools that have been closed, all the colleges that are done for the year, business that are being asked to close down or have employees work form home, all those are locations where we normally do a blood mobile," says Red Cross volunteer Kevin Gaydish.

While supply dwindles, but demand remains the same. The Red Cross has taken to encouraging potential donors to visit fixed donation sites at Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, downtown Norfolk and on the Peninsula.

To make an appointment call 800-REDCROSS or going on redcrossblood.org, or use the Red Cross mobile app.
