84-year-old man dies after jumping off ferry

Daniel Robert Bartley went over the side when the ferry reached the halfway point between Surry and Jamestown, investigators said.

JAMES CITY COUNTY -- An 84-year-old man died when he jumped from the ferry into the James River.

The ferry Pocahontas was headed from Surry to Jamestown and Daniel Robert Bartleywent over the sidewhen it was about half way across the river, JamesCity County authorities told WVEC.com.

The ferryturned around and the crew dropped a rescue boat into the water where he was last seen. Hewas recovered by the crew and CPReffortscouldn't revive him.

Officials believe the James City County man committed suicide.

Authorities say he had driven onto the ferry and got out of his vehicle and jumped around 2:35 p.m.

Ferry service was delayed while authorities spoke with passengers and crew, but service has resumed, they stated.

The Pocahontas remained out of service Tuesdayas the investigation continues, according to VDOT.
