NEW KENT (AP) -- One eastbound lane of Interstate 64 in New Kent County is closed because of a 6-foot-deep sink hole.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the eastbound right lane is closed at mile mark 207 near the Bottoms Bridge exit.
Highway crews performing routine maintenance overnight found the hole.
'They noticed the pothole on the shoulder and started to fill it in and it just wasn't filling up like a normal pothole. So they did some more investigation and found out there was a hole underneath the right lane,' explained VDOT spokeswoman Dawn Eischen.
Contract workers and geologists examined the hole and the best guess is that it could be part of an old well.
'We're looking at old plans of the interstate to see if it was marked as maybe being a well or some sort of structure in that area. But we're having to go real far back in paperwork to find all of that,' she said.
VDOT says repairs are expected to be complete by 5:00 P.M., but the lane won't reopen until 8:00 p.m. because the concrete needs time to set.
Once the work is done, VDOT says the hole shouldn't be a problem again.
