3rd employee dies from Pasquotank attempted prison escape

A third employee from the Pasquotank Correctional Institute has passed away from the attempted prison break on October 12.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WVEC) -- A third employee from the Pasquotank Correctional Institute has passed away from the attempted prison break on October 12.

Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon passed away Monday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from injuries suffered during an inmate escape attempt.

“Our hearts are broken at the passing of Officer Shannon,” said Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks. “Our deepest condolences go out to the Shannon family during this difficult time.”

Shannon, 49, began her Department of Public Safety career at Pasquotank CI in Oct. 21, 2013 as a correctional officer.

Four inmates, Wisezah Buckman, Seth Frazier, Mikel Brady, and Jonathan Monk were indicted on Monday. They all face a slew of charges including first degree murder, burning a public building, and attempted first degree murder.

District Attorney Andrew Womble said he will seek a third indictment for first degree murder when the grand jury meets on December 4. There is a possibility for a fourth charge of first degree murder depending on the status of another victim who is still in the hospital. Maintenance worker Geoffrey Howe is hospitalized at Sentara Norfolk General from injuries he sustained on October 12. He was listed in critical condition.

"We're pulling very strongly for the recovery of Mr. Howe. We certainly don't want to end up having to do a fourth indictment. We hope that Mr. Howe makes it," Womble said.
