PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A major hospital system in Hampton Roads is hiring, and there are many valuable roles that need to be filled to help reduce the strain felt by healthcare professionals.
Bon Secours is hiring for three of their hospitals, which includes Southampton Medical Center in Franklin, Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News and Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, and for other medical offices within the health system.
"We’re all challenged with vacancy rates right now. You know the vacancy rate is much higher than we’ve ever had before and quite frankly than we would like,” said Cassie Lewis, chief nursing and quality officer for Bon Secours.
On February 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the three hospitals listed above will hold open house hiring events.
Many different positions, ranging from registered nurses to pharmacy technicians, need to be filled. If you're not sure whether there is a job for you, you're encouraged to show up with your resume and see.
Sign-on incentives and on-the-spot offers will be given to qualified candidates.
"Bedside nurses are probably our highest demand because of all the different areas in which they support,” Lewis said. “We feel that in this marketplace we have to be competitive.”
Kim Holman is the Market Practicum Coordinator for Bryant and Stratton College. Holman works with several medical offices, and says many are also reaching out to the college for new hires.
"We will also have office come in and speak to our students that are getting ready to graduate,” Holman said.
She said many students don’t even apply for a job. After she places them in medical offices for internships, students are offered a position.
“They get hired almost immediately from that internship experience," she said. "So, they’re not really having to go out and job search.”
Holman says the medical field is steadily growing, and many college graduates could help to manage staffing shortages across the country by applying.
