Does it Work? Gray Away

We put an instant gray root touch-up spray to the "Does it Work?" test.

What is it? a temporary spray you put on the roots of your hair to cover the gray between colorings

What does it claim? to extend the life of your hair color and wash out with shampoo

Who tested it? Virginia Beach resident and busy working mother Carol Ellingwood

What Are The Instructions? First, shake well before each use. Apply it to dry hair only. It's important to note that the nozzle is finely tuned and sensitive, so press down gently. Then let it dry at least 2 to 3 minutes before touching your hair.

If you are trying to cover gray in a center or side part, hold the can 2 to 3 inches away from your head and spray back and forth directly onto the roots. Again, do not touch your hair until it is completely dry.

If you are covering gray around the temple or hairline, use your hand or a comb to lift the hair on the hairline and then spray in short strokes to avoid blotching.

If Gray Away comes in contact with your skin, remove it quickly with a damp cloth and/or soap and water.

Did it work? Ellingwood thought it did a pretty good job. She said it wasn't perfect, but it covered the gray enough so that it wasn't as noticeable. She found at first it was a little difficult to spray gently. She said it came out kind of fast. But once she got use to it, it was easier to control.

Cost/Availability? You can purchase a can of Gray Away for $9.99 at Rite Aid stores.

Additional Comments:
Gray Away is not recommended for very short hair, facial hair, eyebrows or body hair.
