NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The Virginian-Pilot has a new owner.

The newspaper confirms it has been sold to tronc, Inc.

The Chicago-based publisher, previously known as Tribune Publishing, owns several other newspapers, including The Daily Press in Newport News.

In a news release, tronc chairman and CEO Justin Dearborn said, "From its founding in 1865, The Virginian-Pilot has a long history of commitment to journalism. We are thrilled to welcome The Virginian-Pilot to the tronc portfolio. tronc said it acquired the Pilot and its companion websites from Landmark Media Enterprises for a cash purchase of $34 million. The transaction also includes the Pilot's headquarters in downtown Norfolk, its production and distribution facilities in Virginia Beach, and a number of satellite offices in Norfolk and North Carolina.

In addition to the Daily Press, tronc's other media holdings include the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, The Baltimore Sun, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida's Sun-Sentinel, The Morning Call of Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, Hartford Courant, and The San Diego Union-Tribune.
