$71 million for new defense and aerospace facility in James City County

Officials say it will provide more production capacity and in-country tech refresh capabilities for two state-of-the-art cruise missiles.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A Norwegian defense and aerospace business will build its first U.S. defense assembly facility right here in Hampton Roads.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace will invest $71 million in a new 150,000-square-foot facility in James City County. Officials say it will provide more production capacity and in-country tech refresh capabilities for two state-of-the-art cruise missiles being procured by the Department of Defense.

"Following our productive meetings in Europe, Kongsberg's decision to establish its first U.S. defense assembly facility in Virginia reaffirms our status as America's top state for business," Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin in a news release.

The project is expected to create 180 new jobs.
