SUFFOLK, Va. — With prom season just around the corner, many students are on the search for the perfect dress. But not everyone can afford to buy a dress for the big night.
So, Nansemond River High School teacher Candace Credle and her business partner Tamiya Davis decided to start collecting new or used prom dresses on their own.
“The original goal was to collect 100 dresses, and to bless 100 ladies, but now we’re looking to have over 500 dresses,” said Credle. Any student across Hampton Roads is invited to the “Gowns for Crowns” event, where they will be fitted for a free dress and shoes.
“We want the girls to be comfortable in their skin and that positive self-image will automatically come out,” said Credle. Davis said people donated from all over and a lot of the dresses still have tags on them.
“We have dresses that are brand new, one right here has a tag saying $329,” said Davis. And Davis said she hopes everyone finds their dream prom dress.
“Wanting to find that perfect dress and wanting to be so beautiful, it’s just that moment,” said Davis.
Credle said she hopes with more donations from the public, every girl in Hampton Roads in need can receive a dress too.
“Bless someone else who may be less fortunate or can’t find the dress of their dreams. You have to donate, you have to give back,” said Davis.
