NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Angela Reason said the public could benefit from understanding what her office does. She's the clerk of circuit court for the city of Newport News, and interacting with the judicial system is only a small part of her responsibilities.
"We actually have over 800 responsibilities that are outlined in the code of Virginia," said Reason.
That includes serving as the probate court.
"We interface with vital records and statistics, so if someone gets married, of course we process your marriage license, we report back to vital records and statistics. If someone passes away, in Virginia, the circuit clerk court's office is the probate court," Reason said.
On Saturday, Reason is hosting a community resource fair to educate the public about what's available in her office. Representatives will answer questions on numerous topics including expungements, real estate tax exemptions for seniors and estate planning.
Even a genealogy expert will be there. The office houses many records that can help families make ancestral connections.
"We know genealogy is really big. People want to know who they are, where they came from, so this is our one-stop shop where one of the vendors will be the genealogy society," Reason said.
The fair will be Saturday, October 21, from 1-4pm at the Brittingham Midtown Community Center at 570 McLawhorne Drive in Newport News.
