HAMPTON, Va. — It's a way to remember and honor our fallen heroes this holiday season.
Wreaths Across America is preparing to lay wreaths at the gravesites of more than a million veterans nationwide.
On Dec. 14, at Hampton National Cemetery, the Navy Wives' Club #91 will hold a ceremony to lay wreaths. The group is seeking volunteers and wreath sponsors.
"Ultimately, we would like to cover the entire cemetery. Has that happened yet? No. We have 8,810 gravesites just on the Hampton University side. They have until next week to still purchase wreaths," said Navy Wives Club #91 Vice President Christina Rowley.
The deadline to sponsor a wreath is Nov. 30. The cost is $17. As of Tuesday, 1,989 wreaths are sponsored with 8,011 to go.
"We ask every person who grabs a wreath, to grab the little tag that's on the wreath and to write down the person's name, their dates of birth to the time that they passed away, so that people can go back and research and so that they can learn. Each wreath is a living memorial to basically give back and say thank you to everyone who gave the ultimate sacrifice," added Rowley.
The ceremony on the 14th will take place at Hampton National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd, Hampton, VA at noon.
