How Virginia Beach, Norfolk residents celebrated Fourth of July

Despite the heat, it was been a busy Independence Day in Hampton Roads. Crowds packed beaches and fireworks shows.

NORFOLK, Va. — Umbrella after umbrella lined the Virginia Beach Oceanfront as beachgoers tried their best to keep cool this Fourth of July.

Oceanfront parking reached near capacity with thousands flocking to the beach to soak in the sunshine.

“It is very busy out here, but it’s beautiful! Fourth of July! I’m loving it," said Williamsburg resident Connor Mattox.

With temperatures reaching the 90s, beachgoers did their best to beat the heat.

“Don’t get dehydrated. That’s the most important thing. I’m drinking plenty of water," Mattox said.

"[Get] in the water and in the shade, coming off the beach," Virginia Beach visitor Jack Covey said.

Once the sun set, people got ready for the fireworks shows. Town Point Park in Norfolk was a sea of red, white and blue at the 41st annual Great American Picnic.

“It’s Fourth of July weekend. I’m here to have fun with my family. You know, spend time with all the people and see the fireworks," said attendee Jaylen.
