JARVISBURG, N.C. — After a tumultuous year, one North Carolina church is doing its part to spread holiday cheer with free warm meals and clothing.
Leaders at Jarvisburg Church of Christ spent hours cooking, packing and hand-delivering meals across the northeast North Carolina area on Thanksgiving Day.
Deacon of the church, Anthony Carter, said they had a goal of giving 600 meals this year. The church even opened up a drive-through for people to come get their meals with convenience.
"Last year we did 554 meals, and between the orders today, the volunteers eating, and some unexpected visits, I think we will cross that number today," said Carter. "If it's past 600, then we are in trouble!"
It's the fifth year in a row those at the church have put on this Thanksgiving giveaway. However, meals were not the only things handed out.
Those who showed up in person could also walk away with free clothing and sturdy shoes, as the winter months approach and temperatures are expected to drop further.
Carter said he knows it's not just the meals making a difference.
"We hear the stories of those who are unable to leave the house, and are waiting on something like this," said Carter. "It truly makes all the difference in the world to them, and that's why we are doing it, spreading God's love."
Carter said the church also holds a clothing drive every month to give to those who are in need. For those looking for more information, you can find that here.
