What you can do to prioritize your safety when shopping for the holidays

Law enforcement urge extra vigilance this time of year when you’re out and about, especially during the holiday shopping rush.

NORFOLK, Va. — During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it can be easy to let your guard down while on the hunt for the perfect gifts and best deals.

Local law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone of simple measures meant to keep you safe.

Newport News police are urging shoppers to go out during the day, limit the cash they carry and stay aware of their surroundings.

Norfolk resident and shopper Bryan Rhea agrees.

“Understand your environment, the people who are around, keeping your eyes on a swivel, things of that matter," said Rhea. "Park in well-lit areas and going as a group, as well, is very important to me.”

Madison Mooers, who also lives in Norfolk, offered similar advice about not going out alone.

"I think a lot of the times friends will just tag along for fun, even if they’re not shopping and that’s an extra safety measure," said Mooers.

As for shoppers on online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Norfolk police called attention to the city’s three e-commerce exchange zones, which are under 24/7 video surveillance.

Police also say people can avoid scams by making purchases on reputable or secure sites.

"If something doesn't seem right or if something seems off, it probably is," Rhea added.

In terms of packages, Virginia Beach police recommend scheduling deliveries around times when someone is home or when a neighbor can grab them.

And when it comes to your car, put packages in your trunk, leave valuables out of plain sight, always lock it, don’t leave it running and keep your keys in your hands.

Despite the caution, however, you don’t have to walk around in fear.

“Be confident in yourself. Don’t look like a target. Don’t carry around expensive items," Mooers said.

In case someone tries to snatch your wallet or purse, Hampton police strongly suggest you give it up right away, adding, “it’s not worth your life.”

Afterward, report what happened to local authorities or call 911.

Furthermore, if you’re shopping with little ones, be sure to always have an eye on them. Also, make a plan, like establishing a meeting place, ahead of time with your kids in case you get separated.
