NORFOLK, Va. — If you're planning to celebrate Thanksgiving Eve with some alcohol, Lyft will have discounted rides across Hampton Roads Wednesday night in an effort minimize the number of crashes involving drunk driving.

Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) launched the 757 Sober Ride with the ride-sharing app to ensure everyone can celebrate the holidays safely.

The night before Thanksgiving, dubbed "Blackout Wednesday" or "Drinksgiving," typically sees an increase in alcohol consumption.

The discounted fare is meant to ensure "you make it to the Thanksgiving table," DSHR said in a release. "If you get blasted on Blackout Wednesday, make sure your Thanksgiving holiday isn’t wasted. Plan for a safe and sober ride home."

Hampton Roads residents age 21 and older can take advantage of the discounted fare starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The 757 Sober Ride code covers up to $15 off a fare home, DSHR said.

DSHR said it will post its 757 Sober Ride promo code at 3 p.m. Wednesday, which is valid between 4 p.m. that day and 4 a.m. Thursday.

“It is critical that anyone heading out to a bar or party take precaution and plan for a sober driver to see them home safely,” said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson.  “Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving Eve celebration has become a particularly dangerous night on the roads. We want drivers to take this night seriously.  Driving drunk is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk.”

Last year, officials reported there were 450 crashes in the Hampton Roads area between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to Monday.
