NORFOLK, Va. — Fire safety is top of mind, with at least four house fires that have been reported across Hampton Roads in the past five days.
“You just really want to make sure they’re not a fire hazard and they are if they are damaged, or they’re misused," said Tom Lyons of the National Fire Protection Association. "Decembers are the worst month for home fires in the United States.”
Firefighters responded to two fires in Virginia Beach within 24 hours, along with other fires reported in Portsmouth and Chesapeake.
Fire officials told 13News Now a space heater caused one of the fires in Virginia Beach and we've learned in two of those other fires, smoke alarms alerted families, helping them safely escape with minor injuries.
“Smoke alarms save lives, so you want to make sure they’re on and they’re on each floor of your home," said Lyons.
He reminds the public that a majority of house fires begin in the kitchen.
“You can also prevent things coming off the stove by turning pot handles inward and making sure that those stove tops are clear of anything that could ignite," said Lyons.
As for your Christmas tree, Lyons said it's important for it to be away from exits, such as windows and doors. And in the event your fire alarm sounds, Lyons said to have a game plan.
Fire safety also extends to your Christmas gifts. In recent years, the number of fires caused by lithium batteries has increased. Experts are urging families to check wires and appliances as simple safety steps.
