A local family receives a holiday surprise

13News Now, the Salvation Army and Stihl partnered to help a local family as part of the Angel Tree program.

NORFOLK, Va. — 13News Now is teaming up with the Salvation Army once again to help spread holiday cheer to families across Hampton Roads. This time we're helping a family who experienced job loss and medical difficulties.

Through the Angel Tree campaign, the Salvation Army helps donate Christmas gifts for children in need. And 13News Now had the chance to meet some of the families behind those angels, including Tanya Ramos-Martinez and her family.

"Lucia and Lucca are my six- and eight-year-old," Tanya said. "When Lucia was two years old, Lucca was born with a rare craniofacial condition. He's had about 17 surgeries since he's been born, but at the same time, Lucia stopped talking. Every month we have at least 16 standing appointments. I just can't work. I just can't, because they come first. My hands are really full."

13News Now and Stihl got together to gift the family with items off of their Christmas list and surprised them with not only toys but also $1,500 to help with holiday expenses.

You can watch the full gifting in the video player above.
