Grand Illumination Parade returns to Downtown Norfolk

For many, the parade marks the unofficial start of the holiday season, and this year didn’t disappoint!

NORFOLK, Va. — Saturday marked the 37th annual Grand Illumination Parade in Downtown Norfolk.

For many, it’s the unofficial start of the holiday season, and this year didn’t disappoint!

Some waited in line for hours, while others took to parking garages to get a good view of the parade.

“I love it all. I love going to parades. So, it’s all my favorite," said 10-year-old Kimmie.

Spectators traveled near and far to take in the two-mile parade route in the heart of Norfolk. Yvonne Smith said going to the Grand Illumination is a 10-year family tradition.

“I live in Gates County, North Carolina. But every year, we come for the parade. It’s our kick-off for the Christmas holidays," Smith said.

The Norfolk skyline lit up in unison promptly at 7 p.m., followed by the parade. This year’s theme was "Gingerbread Dreams."

Parade coordinators called this year one of the largest with more than 90 different floats and bands.

“Kind of feels surreal, you know, standing here waiting for it all," said Anthony Geluso while waiting for the parade to begin. "Feels like I’m on the set of a movie, and it makes me want to go home and watch 'Miracle on 34th Street.'”

For some, it’s the holiday lights that draw them to the celebration. For others, it’s the music. But for most, it’s simply the time spent with loved ones.

“It’s just really fun and we’ve been doing it since we was kids," said 14-year-old Nauri who attended the parade with her three cousins.
