NORFOLK, Va. — 13News Now is teaming up with the Salvation Army once again to help spread holiday cheer to families across Hampton Roads. This time we're helping a family who experienced job loss and medical difficulties.
Through the Angel Tree campaign, the Salvation Army helps donate Christmas gifts for children in need. And 13News Now had the chance to meet some of the families behind those angels, including Tamyko Doherty and her family.
"In 2009, my mom passed," Doherty said. "My youngest son, I found out I was pregnant with him after my mom died. When he was nine months old, I found out he had an illness called tuberous sclerosis. It’s an illness that attacks all the vital organs."
And through it all, she's been dealing with her own health issues.
"I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, left ankle surgery, torn meniscus, left shoulder surgery, cervical spine surgery," she said. "I'm not good at asking for help."
13News Now and Pyramid Roofing got together to check items off of their Christmas list and surprised them with not only toys but also $1,500 to help with holiday expenses.
You can watch the full gifting in the video player above.
