VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Strawberry picking season is officially getting underway!
Local farms and produce stands across Hampton Roads are starting to offer their brightest, juiciest strawberries. Vaughan Farm's Produce took to Facebook to announce its first day would be Tuesday.
Here's a non-exhaustive list of some family-owned farms here in coastal Virginia that you can check out this spring:
- Vaughan Farm's Produce, 1258 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers a u-pick field as well as pre-picked quarts. They also offer fresh local asparagus, local nuts, eggs, and more.
- Mount Pleasant Farms, 2201 Mount Pleasant Road Chesapeake, Virginia, offers farm fresh eggs, fresh produce, and more. Their seasonal u-pick for strawberries lasts from about mid-April to mid-June.
- Cullipher Farm, 772 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers a u-pick field as well as a variety of other farm activities. They also offer online ordering ahead of time if you just want to swing by!
- Salem Berry Farm, 1763 Salem Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia, isn't quite ready to offer strawberries yet. "You may have seen other farms posting about their berries being ready, they grow an early variety that we do not grow," they posted on Facebook on April 3. When the farm does open up for strawberries in a few weeks, both u-pick and pre-picked containers will be made available. You can bring your own bucket or buy one of theirs.
- Greenbrier Farms, 225 Sign Pine Road Chesapeake, Virginia, is also offering u-pick berries and containers. They also have a farmer's market and playground area!
Some of these farms and their markets also have other fun spring activities for all ages. Make sure you call ahead or check their social media before you plan a strawberry-picking day since their hours can sometimes be dependent on the weather.
