HAMPTON, Va. — Local food banks continue to see an increase in need and donations are down after the holidays.
The Virginia Peninsula Food Bank is in need of food donations.
The foodbank got a lot of food donations during the holidays but all that donated food is gone.
There has been a 50 percent increase in household visits and they estimate 77,000 visits by people over the last year, some of which are repeat visits of course said Karen Joyner, the CEO at Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. She says revisits average 5 visits per year.
There are many ways to donate. Anyone wanting to donate food can visit the Hampton location Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. at 2401 Aluminum Avenue.
Monetary donations can be made on their website.
Joyner says they can supply three meals for every dollar donated.
For families in need on the peninsula, she encourages them to visit the website and find where their mobile pantries are scheduled to be doing distributions or find a local partner food pantry near them.
