Shark Week comes to the Virginia Aquarium: Here's how you can get involved

Shark Week at the Virginia Aquarium is July 21-27. If you want to learn more about your aquatic neighbors, the Aquarium has a series of fun events to enjoy.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Shark Week is almost upon the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and you can sink your teeth into the action! The week takes place from Sunday, July 21, and runs through Saturday, July 27, with different events featured at the North and South Buildings of the Aquarium.

The Virginia Aquarium is also hosting a fundraising event in partnership with Duck Donuts. Anyone who makes a gift to the Virginia Aquarium Foundation through July 13 will receive a coupon for a free donut at participating Duck Donut locations. All funds will go to the SAFE Sharks & Rays conservation program.

Talks on sharks will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day in the Promenade Room in the North Building. You can find talks at the South Building at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Education Hall every day except for Tuesday, where you can find one session at 12 p.m.

North Building Shark Talks

The fun starts on Sunday with a myth-busting discussion about sharks.

On Monday, learn about shark anatomy and their six senses.

Tuesday, participate in an interactive discussion with scientists about shark research and even try doing some research of your own.

Wednesday, learn more about shark threats and conservation.

Thursday, dive deeper into the shark family tree and learn about how they are related to rays.

And on Friday, have all your shark questions answered during a Q&A session with a shark scientist.

South Building Shark Talks

Starting on Sunday, you can learn about the super abilities sharks have and how they vary depending on their species.

Monday, learn about and from women in shark science and the strides they are making in shark research and conservation.

Tuesday's special session is for those interested in pursuing a marine science career! Have conversations with Aquarium staff about what they do and how they got there. Again, there is only one session for this event at 12 p.m.

Wednesday, learn how you can make an impact and contribute to research and conservation. Learn what opportunities are available through citizen science projects.

Thursday, learn about shark tagging and how they're used in research. You can even try tagging a shark yourself!

If you still have questions by the time Friday comes around, ask a shark scientist anything in a Q&A session.

Saturday, learn more about shark superpowers and the abilities different species have.

Tickets are available for sale on the Aquarium's website.
