NORFOLK, Va. — A dog is now in the care of the Norfolk SPCA Adoption Center & Veterinary Clinics after being abandoned outside their facility Tuesday morning.
According to the organization's social media post, the puppy was abandoned by her owner and tied to a loose piece of a gutter at the front step of the facility while it was closed.
Moments later the dog broke free and ran into traffic – narrowly avoiding being hit by vehicles. The dog was ultimately unharmed by running into ongoing traffic, and several people stopped to make sure she was okay.
The Norfolk SPCA is now working to provide the care she needs.
"We believe every animal deserves a loving home, and we can't help but feel the pain of how this little one was treated," the Norfolk SPCA stated on social media. "We are doing everything we can to ensure this puppy receives the care, attention, and love they deserve and to ensure justice is served."
The organization encourages anyone interested in sponsoring the puppy to donate, and anyone interested in adopting her to reach out.
This isn't the first time a dog was abandoned outside of the Norfolk SPCA.
Earlier this year, surveillance cameras outside the facility captured the moment two people allegedly placed a dog in a cage with food and water, covered the cage with a blanket, and abandoned the dog outside the building. The dog eventually escaped and ran into the road where it was hit at least three times or more by different vehicles.
In this instance, the dog was tragically killed.
At the time, Norfolk SPCA Director of Veterinary Services Jesika Streeter said there had been about six cases of abandoned pets outside of its building since the start of 2024.
