INSIDE ACCESS: This couple converted a school bus into a tiny home

Could you live in a tiny home? This couple converted a school bus into a 400-square-foot home.

WAKEFIELD, Va. — Here you'll find all of the comforts of home in tighter quarters.

Kelly Kruschel and David Drewry live in Wakefield but their home comes from the Seven Cities.

"This bus was decommissioned in Norfolk a few years ago," Drewry said. "There’s laws in other states that require you to have to paint the bus ... but Virginia is not one of those states."

The space may be a little tight with about 300 to 400 square feet of livable area. The aim, however, is much bigger - sustainability that expands beyond the square footage, "the ultimate goal is to get solar panels running."

Like many other homes, you'll find a shower, cooking area, bedroom, and a less common latrine. The bus has a composting toilet with the idea of returning natural resources back into the earth.

With this type of tiny home, there are more hurdles to overcome. Insurance was one of the bumps in the road for the school bus home. Drewry recalled, "actually had to go through a broker because I went to 5-10 insurance agents locally that had never heard of a converted school bus."

"I think the laws are still trying to catch up. Converted school buses are still a new thing."

Like any other residence - tiny or not, mobile or stationary - you'll have some work to do to make it a home.

If you're thinking of converting a school bus, which may only run you a few thousand dollars, there's one other thing to keep in mind: "gas mileage isn’t the best but you know!"
