MIAMI — Zoo Miami is saying goodbye to one of its elephants that used to be a Virginia Zoo staple.
Cita, a nearly 51-year-old female African elephant, died after having a confrontation with another elephant. Cita was knocked down and didn't recover from the altercation.
She underwent a necropsy to help determine a cause of death, and although results won't be available for some weeks, doctors said a blood clot could have been a major contributing factor.
Cita arrived at Zoo Miami nearly three years ago from the Virginia Zoo, alongside another elephant named Lisa. Lisa died in 2017 of a mesenteric torsion. Cita lived at the Virginia Zoo for decades before being transferred to Zoo Miami.
