PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- In January of 1967 the Green Bay Packers played the Kansas City Chiefs in the very first Super Bowl, Roger Brown, owner of Roger Brown's Restaurant and Sports Bar in Portsmouth was at the game in the Los Angeles Coliseum.
"Oh it was fun. I was there because I was practicing for the Pro Bowl game and they gave us all tickets! Good seats too," he recalled.
From 1959 to 1969, Roger Brown was a powerful defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams. He loved the game. Super Bowl one was all about the established NFL Green Bay Packers taking on the upstart AFL team Kansas City. It was a whole different culture then.
"There were plenty of empty seats and the halftime entertainment was college bands," said Brown.
Brown played in seven pro bowls and went on to build a successful chain of restaurants. His Portsmouth establishment opened in 2000.
He has been inducted into the College Football Hall Of Fame and the Black College Hall Of Fame. However, the Maryland State alum only has one regret in life, besides not playing in a Super Bowl.
"I hope I can someday be inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame."
