NORFOLK, Va. — It’s a look back at Easter in Hampton Roads.
We’re spotlighting three different stories capturing the spirit of the holiday.
Like in 1988, when 13News Now covered an inclusive spin on a classic Easter egg hunt in Norfolk.
Most of the children hunting for eggs that day were blind or visually impaired but were able to participate in the event thanks to high-tech eggs that beeped so children could hear where they were hidden.
In 1995, we made a stop at the Rubber Rabbit Ranch near Suffolk.
Homeowner Mary Britt’s Easter display was so popular she received letters in the mail from fans.
That year, it featured more than 100 rubber bunnies and 2,000 plastic eggs in her Dogwood trees.
Britt first put the display together for her grandchildren but because of its popularity, she brought it back another year because of interest from the public.
Another Easter moment captured in 1988 was the powerful Easter service that year at Fort Monroe.
The event featured a prayer by the late Jim Irwin, a retired astronaut who walked on the moon.
Irwin was the 8th person to make a lunar landing but was the youngest of those astronauts to die.
He died of a heart attack just three years after that service at Fort Monroe.
