BENTLEY'S CORNER: Dog boating safety

Bentley goes boating for the first time!

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — If you’re lucky enough to have a dog that loves the water, then boating is definitely an activity you’d want to share with them.

We took Bentley out on the water with John and Morgan, owners of One Knot On Water Boat Training in Virginia Beach to learn how to boat with your dog.

It starts with planning ahead.

“Whenever we get on a boat, we want to plan on having plenty of fresh, clean water with a bowl, a towel. Sometimes the decks get a little hot so a nice cool place a dog can lay down, and also a life vest,” said Morgan.

The life vest is most important. They come in all shapes and sizes to fit all dogs. Just because there is a swim stroke named after a dog doesn’t mean they all know how to swim.

“Whenever you take your dog out on the water, you want to have a good time. You want to relax. But you also want to have a game plan in the event that they fall in or they decide to jump overboard,” John said.

When you go boating is also important.

“We typically recommend going out in the mornings. That way it's not too hot," said Morgan. "Same thing [for] early evenings. That way it's much more enjoyable for you and the dog."

Always remember to have fun and of course, take plenty of pictures!
