VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Inside a small yurt at Virginia Beach’s Hilltop shopping center, Sarah Hodge is practicing an alternative form of therapy known as aura photography.
“Your aura is your energetic field,” said Hodge. “It’s the unseen part of you that people feel.”
She said she can capture a picture of your energetic field through color using a special camera and a set of metal hand plates connected to a computer inside.
“The hand plates read your energetic off-put, or your frequency, and we can take a photo of that and see it,” said Hodge.
Hodge moved back to Virginia Beach from Denver in 2023 and has been popularizing aura photography, and offering sessions through her company Aura Theory, locally ever since.
It’s something she learned as a yoga instructor in Austin, Texas in 2017, the science of what’s known as frisson.
“That is, energetically, your body shifting, and we can take a photo of that and see it,” said Hodge.
Hodge refers to aura photography as the union of science and art. She also interprets the colors shown in a person’s picture through a reading. Each color, whether it’s blue, yellow, green, etc., has a specific meaning.
“When you have colors showing up, it is 'state' and 'trait,'” said Hodge. “State is your current state of being, and trait is intrinsically who you are. I get a lot of tears because a lot of people really feel a lot of validation.”
Hodge’s Aura Theory offers pop-up and private events and will have a residency soon at Cosmic Wellness opening at Hilltop West shopping center in Virginia Beach. You can also book an appointment for a session.
