PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Grammy Award-winning rapper and Portsmouth's own Missy Elliott is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week.
In an exclusive interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Elliott sat down with Robin Roberts to discuss the honor and what has led up to it. She said words can't describe how honored she feels, especially considering 2023 is the 50th anniversary of hip hop's beginnings.
"No matter what people say, the hip-hop world is something special and unique," Elliott said.
The two talked about the rapper's dedication to her hometown, including her recent donation of $50,000 to the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
"Giving back to my hometown is important because I was one of those kids that watched my mother, you know, struggle," explained Elliott. "For me, I'm just like, you know, I'm blessed. And I believe that when you get blessings, they're not for you to harbor them for yourself."
The donation came on October 17, which Gov. Glenn Youngkin recognized as "Missy Elliott Day" in Virginia in 2022.
The interview is available on GMA's website.
