Polar plunge: The Cool School Challenge at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront raises thousands for Special Olympics

The fundraising event included a dance party, free hot chocolate, coffee and snacks from Wawa, a costume contest parade, and of course, the plunge.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Hundreds of students rushed into the chilly Atlantic on Friday to kick off the 32nd annual Polar Plunge weekend.

Friday's event was the "Cool School Challenge" fundraiser. The money raised goes to help fund year-round programs for over 21,000 Special Olympics Virginia Athletes.

13News Now meteorologist Craig Moeller co-hosted Thursday's event and shocked the students with how much money they raised.

"You guys raised $86,598!" Craig proclaimed. "Let's hear it for the Special Olympics ... it's so much fun out here guys, look at these guys! They did it, they did it!"

The main polar plunge event is set for Saturday at 1 o'clock in front of the Hilton Oceanfront Hotel.
