YORKTOWN, Va. — A seventh grader in York County was revealed as a winner in a statewide art contest Tuesday.
During a special presentation, Maria Rose Sajan learned she was one of the winners of the Virginia Lottery Thank A Teacher Art Contest. The Grafton Middle School student beat out hundreds of her peers.
Maria Rose was one of three winners from the elementary, middle and high school levels for the sixth annual contest. The winners' art pieces will be turned into thank-you notes and handed out to thousands of teachers across Virginia during National Teacher Appreciation.
Maria Rose was awarded a $200 gift card for her efforts, while her school received a $2,000 credit from The Supply Room to help stock its art department.
“The Lottery is proud to support Virginia's K-12 public schools. The art contest takes that a step further by recognizing the creativity of three students in the Commonwealth and fostering future artists by giving back to the winning school's art departments, thanks to our partners at The Supply Room," said interim director Tony Russell.
