Opening night of Virginia Arts Festival's 2024 season features the tale of Sweeney Todd

Broadway performers will join the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a performance of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" at Chrysler Hall.

NORFOLK, Va. — A smash hit musical that won eight Tony Awards when it premiered on Broadway in 1979 is coming to Norfolk this weekend, kicking off The Virginia Arts Festival's 2024 season.

Talented Broadway performers will join the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a performance of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" at Chrysler Hall. 

Award-winning actress Donna Lynne Champlin, who plays the character of Mrs. Lovett in the performance, joined us Thursday on 13News Now at noon for a preview. 

Champlin spoke about her role in show, the plot of Sweeney Todd and what audiences can expect from this particular performance, and how rehearsals have been going all week. Watch the full interview in the video player above! 

The performance's opening night is this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are on sale via The Virginia Arts Festival website.
