PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The City of Portsmouth on Tuesday announced it was reimbursing the legal fees accrued by an officer who was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter in a 2018 shooting.
The unanimous vote reimburses former Officer Vincent McClean $142,000.
In July, a jury found McClean not guilty of the May 2018 shooting on Navajo Trail that ended with 28-year-old Willie Marable's death.
Portsmouth police were responding to a home invasion involving two armed suspects when authorities say the two refused officers orders, prompting an officer to fire their weapon, striking Marable.
Despite calling for an ambulance, prosecutors at the time argued McClean was responsible for Marable's death as he failed to provide CPR.
Just hours after the not-guilty verdict was announced, a grand jury indicted McClean for the in-custody death of a pregnant woman, Carmeita Vangilder.
