YORK COUNTY, Va. — A York County man was arrested Wednesday and faces 27 charges for alleged sexual acts with an underaged person.
Shawn Tenkley, 41, was charged with nine counts each of forcible sodomy, taking indecent liberties with a child, and carnal knowledge of a child, the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office said.
These charges are considered felonies.
The sheriff's office said the victim was between the ages of 13 and 15. They didn't specify who the victim was, since they are a minor.
A York County parent said she felt shocked when she learned about the accusations against Tenkley, who she's known since 2017.
"I would never have guessed this for sure," she said over the phone. "As far as I could always tell, they always had a happy home, a happy family. So, I definitely feel for his wife, family, and other children."
York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. "Danny" Diggs said the charges stem from a series of incidents reported to have happened in York County between January and April.
Diggs said Tenkley is known in the community as a coach for the York County Little League Baseball team. However, the sheriff said the victim in this investigation is neither a family member nor a member of the Little League team.
"At this point, it seems to be an isolated case," said Diggs. "The victim was not part of any organization that he was dealing with, so it doesn't appear that any of those groups he was a part of, that any of those children, were in any kind of jeopardy."
While this appears to be an isolated incident, Diggs said he is not ruling out the possibility of more victims involved in this case at this time.
Tenkley is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond, according to the sheriff's office.
