Tractor trailer gets stuck inside westbound tube of Downtown Tunnel

Virginia State Police said the truck got wedged in the westbound tube after a crash involving it and two SUVs. There was another crash behind that one.

NORFOLK, Va. — Crews worked to get a tractor trailer unstuck from the Downtown Tunnel Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said troopers received a call shortly after 10 a.m. about a crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 264 at the tunnel.

The wreck involved the tractor trailer and two SUVs that were heading from Norfolk to Portsmouth. The tractor trailer ended up wedged inside the tube.

Anaya said medics took the driver of the truck and two children who were in one of the SUVs to the hospital. They were hurt, but Anaya said they should be all right.

There was a second crash that took place. That happened when two other SUVs were trying to avoid the wreck involving the tractor trailer.

Crews rerouted westbound traffic before the entrance to the tunnel while they worked to get the truck out of the tube and things cleaned up.

At 11 a.m., Anaya said that the tube was closed indefinitely.
